Dear Mr. Walker,

Thank you for taking the time to write to the office of Justin Trudeau. I am sorry to hear that you have not received answers to your questions, or in some cases, even a response. I have forwarded your letter on to Justin as well as the Liberal Critic of the Environment John McKay. I also wanted to take a moment to try to address some of the specific issues and questions that you raised.

When the earthquake struck Japan in March of 2011, numerous Canadian agencies began a program of reviews and actions, to not only offer assistance, but to also review nuclear programs here in Canada. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission specifically, undertook numerous programs to not only work with global nuclear partners, but to also review the systems in place, in order to learn from the disaster and ensure that Canadian Nuclear Facilities were learning from Japan’s experiences.

http://www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca/eng/mediacentre/updates/2011/japan-earthquake/ is a link that will take you the specific Action Plan that was produced in response the accident. As the accident happened in Japan, any offers of aid from Canada, of which there were substantive offers made, were, and are, entirely up to the government of Japan to take us up on.

You raised concerns over the risks posed to Canadians. Please know that both Health Canada and the B.C. Ministry of Health have been closely monitoring the situation as it effects Canada.

The B.C. Ministry of Health produced the following FAQ on the disaster (http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/cpa/mediasite/pdf/FAQ-JapanRadiation.pdf).

As the situation unfolds, we will continue to monitor all news that comes out of Japan and continue to monitor the effects here at home.

I appreciate that you took the time to write to us about this extremely concerning issue.

Sincerely,

Kiel Dixon-Lawlor
